Cop fired for blocking Uhuru motorcade charged with impersonation

A police officer who was fired early this year for blocking the president’s motorcade was charged on Friday with impersonating a public officer.

Joel Nyakongo also faced three other charges namely obstructing motorists, resisting arrest and failing to obey verbal directives from a uniformed officer.

The court heard that on July 23 at Haile Selassie avenue in Nairobi, Nyakongo presented himself as a police officer while under arrest for a traffic offence.

Two traffic officers arrested Nyakongo for obstructing the entrance of the EasyCoach booking office after he stopped his saloon car in the middle of the road.

The accused was hostile towards the officers and attempted to resist arrest.

Police reports indicate that when Nyakongo was take to the station, he produced his police ID card.

Upon investigation, officers found that he had been dismissed earlier this year.

Nyakongo was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 or bond of Sh200,000 and a surety of the same amount.

Senior resident magistrate Faith Mutuku ordered the accused to furnish the court with copies of all witness statements that will be used during the hearing of the case.

The case will be mentioned on August 12 for parties to confirm if the necessary documents have been availed.

A hearing date of November 28 was set by the magistrate.
