NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 5 – Kiambu Governor William was on Friday charged with ethnic contempt over remarks he made in November last year.

He denied the charges when he appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku at the Milimani Law Courts.

Governor Kabogo was freed on a cash bail of Sh200,000 or a surety bond of Sh500,000.

He is accused of making the remarks which were considered to have potential to evoke ethnic emotions by saying some communities do not embrace circumcision.
Court records show that he made the remarks at Thika Stadium on November 25.

The prosecution had opposed his release on bond saying it was against the interest of justice before his lawyers convinced the court that the accused has always obeyed court summons.

Summons to have him take the plea were issued two weeks ago by Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo.
