In a video capturing the moment, the officer was holding a riot shield on one hand while holding onto the speeding vehicle with the other hand.

He, however, seemed to have lost his grip falling off the vehicle with a thud.

Anti-riot officers had been deployed in the town to quell chaos which emerged following reports that Mr Mandago and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos were being questioned at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi.

Area residents defended their county boss supporting his strong stand against appointment of Professor Laban Ayiro as acting Vice Chancellor of Moi University.

During the demonstrations, a K24 cameraman claimed to have been roughed up and his camera broken by an Eldoret deputy OCS identified as Pius Misikhu for filming the riots.

It is said that the officer ordered Duncan Wanga to stop recording the protests and in the process physically harassed him. It was during the scuffle that he broke the camera.

The incident was heavily condemned by fellow journalists who took to the streets from the Eldoret High Courts, along the Uganda Road and finally to the Eldoret Police station where they presented their petition to the OCS Eldoret-West.
