I am not going to second guess God in 2017

(Trust in the LORD with all your heart “and Lean not…Proverbs 3:5-6)

Happy new year to all our readers and the Kenyan diaspora at large. My family wishes you and all your families a healthy and prosperous year. May God Bless and protection you and your families in 2017 & continue to provide for you His endurance, steadfastness and a greater depth of His understanding and wisdom in all you do this year. I am not about to tell you how to make New Year’s resolutions because my personal experience has been different. I do not have to wait for the New Year to change those things that need to be changed in my life. Learning through experience, I have come to know that a successful and fulfilling life depends on our ability to make deliberate and conscious decisions, review those decisions and its consequences, identify alternatives and make necessary changes. We are either daily changed for the better by our decisions or being changed by others’ decisions.

The New Year has begun with a lot of uncertainties, rumors and threats of war, distrust and power struggles among different nations. There is just a spirit of defiance in the air that wants to rule and yet wants to appear very subtle. If you are a believer, you should know the times and seasons we live in. If there was a time when we needed to look unto the Lord for understanding it is now. I love the fact that God challenges us to trust Him and not what we hear, see or understand. Proverbs 3:5-6 says: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

We must start this year by trusting God and knowing that whether the events of the world get worse than you expect or not, He is still in control of our lives and the future. Looking at your situations, circumstances and what you have gone through or even going through today, you may continue to rely on your own strength. Many times we discover that relying upon ourselves to resolve issues or overcome challenges is not enough. The only true source of strength and defense is our Almighty God and nothing else. Do not allow the devil to influence you to resist God’s guidance. God’s wisdom is all we need each day.

This year 2017, there are events and situations that will lead you to feel like trusting God is a tough thing to do. Already, there is a spirit of doubt that has been released to weaken your belief in God. There is a spirit that is trying to make the bible seem irrelevant and non-applicable in this generation. Be reminded that the Word of God: “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD. For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought Nor cease to yield fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7)

The devil intensifies your challenges and 2017 will not be different. Though his tactics may change, the intensity will increase so he may wear you out. Resist the devil and rest in the strength and peace of our Lord. Be vigilant, wise and attentive at all times. Knowing that the devil is actively looking for ways to bring disunity in your family, miss communications at your work place, among brothers and sisters, in the government and between governments of the world.

Hence the word of God warns us to: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (I peter 5:8). When you are weak and have no answers to what you are going through, allow your child-like faith to rise in you & listen to the Holy Spirit. He is our comforter, our teacher, present comforter in times of trouble & our helper in all we will go though in 2017. He has gone before us and knows everything we need in response to what will happen. In those desperate moments, be vulnerable to the Holy Spirit, allow Him to minister to you. Allow Him to teach you a new and learn from Him.

Examine yourself. It is easy to blame others, or blame everything that happens to us, on outside forces while forgetting that we might be contributing to our situations through the choices or decisions we make. We will go to great lengths to excuse our behavior, our actions, and our sins. We can pretty much find a reason for any bad thing we do or happens to us. Prophet Jeremiah sheds light on this: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

In 2017 put God first in all you do. Ask yourself: how is God glorified through what I am doing, desiring to do, or even what I am are asking Him for? How is God glorified if you get a better paying Job, if you get rich, healed, or even promoted? “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” (Proverbs 3:9–10). In 2017, run from evil because the year is going to be filled with a lot of negatives news both in the US and around the world. The devil’s aim will be to clutter up our relationship with God. John, the writer of the fourth gospel, describes them as the desires of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes, and the pride in our lives. In other words, our blessings can easily become our stumbling blocks when we totally depend on them for our happiness and existence.

Instead, life works best when we remember the true source of our blessings—God—and focus on the things that please Him. This means that we will have to reject to being wise in our own eyes; fear the Lord and shun from evil. Paul writes to Timothy in 2 Tim 2:22 and tells him to “Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” (2 Timothy 2:22). Though it is not easy to flee away from evil, the Lord has promised to honor our commitment to flee. Ask Him for strength and determine to honor Him and keep His Word. Pursuing God in our situations and circumstances brings healing, peace and adds to an abundant life.

May the Lord’s blessings be upon you as you position yourself for victory. I believe that this year our faith in Him will be tested by fire but He has promised to be with us, and never forsake us to the end of time.

Till next week: May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Yours in Christ,

Evangelist Isabella Mwango
