NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 2 – Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Thursday cleared a medical bill for 6 National Super Alliance (NASA) gunshot victims who were admitted to a hospital in Migori.

The six were admitted to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital which detained them when they failed to pay medical bills amounting to Sh260,000.

The victims identified as Benard Otieno Ojwang,Dave Ouma Okongo,Collins Ochieng ,Jacob Odhiambo ,Hezron Kirongo and Harrison Ochieng sustained the gunshot wounds following confrontations with police during the just concluded repeat presidential election when violence broke out in parts of Nyanza where voting did not take place.

Voting in four constituencies in Nyanza (Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya, Kisumu) did not take place in last week’s presidential poll after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati had cited security concerns for the poll body’s staff.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga who boycotted the exercise had made a clarion appeal to his supporters to stay away from the exercise which saw President Uhuru Kenyatta declared the winner after managing to garner 98 percent of the total votes cast translating to 7.4 million votes.

Governor Sonko also donated Sh10,000 to the victims as their transport back home.

In the meantime, the National Police Service has revealed that only 19 people were killed during the August and Octber elections contrary to a report by the Independent Medico-Legal Unit which had placed the number to be at 36.

The police has accused the lobby group of exaggerating the figures and said that they only recorded 11 fatalities in August and 8 during last month’s repeat election.
