NEW KENYAN IDs LAUNCHED IN LONDON

The new Kenyan Identity Cards were launched in London on Monday 5th December, 2011 by  Hon. Minister of State for Immigration And Registration Of Persons, Hon. Gerald Otieno Kajwang, MP and Mr Rueben Kimotho, Director of National Registration Bureau. The ceremony took place at the offices of the Kenya High Commission in London. The director and the minister were welcomed by the Kenya High Commissioner in London HE Ephraim Ngare.

The commissioner explained that Kenyans in UK were delighted that the minister was able to find time out to come and inaugurate London as a National Identity Cards Issuing Office. He also asked the minister to consider in future other services provided by his ministry such as the issue of Birth Certificates, could be brought closer to the Kenyans in Diaspora here in London.

Kenya One – The High Commisisoner and his wife Mrs. Jane were first to be issued with the IDs byMinister Hon. Kajwang

The director of director of National Registration Mr. Reuben M. Kimotho explained that the cards are new and they are the first to be issued in London.  He continued to explain that all Kenyans in Kenya and outside Kenya will now change their IDs to the new plastic which are durable. He said that Kenyans should not fear that the data of the IDs might be shared with other governments. He continued to say that there is data protection in Kenya which is guaranteed by the new constitution. Before issuing the new IDs to 22 Kenyans in UK at the ceremony, Hon. Minister of State for Immigration And Registration Of Persons, Hon. Gerald Otieno Kajwanj explained that his ministry will extend this services to USA and one more station in Europe as there has been a problem with issuing of UK visa to those living in other parts of Europe. The minister concluded his speech by saying that the scheme is targeting the young Kenyans who came to the UK before they were 18 years and those who have lost their Identity Cards. Among those who were issued with the new IDs were the High Commissioner and his wife Mrs. Jane Ngare, the Deputy High Commissioner Ms Jackline Rumumba Yonga, several staffs of High Commissioner, Mr. Seed and his wife Pastor Jane Njiiri, Bishop Wahenga, Rev. Kibathi of PCEA and the ID’s boss Mr. Mwaura among others.
