They have such enormous talent, with players in the local leagues and in Europe. It would not take so long before they become a formidable force in football,” the tactician said.

As of March 2025, the vacant Harambee Stars head coach position has been filled by South African football legend Benni McCarthy. McCarthy, a former Manchester United forwards coach, was officially unveiled by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on March 3, 2025, signing a two-year contract through 2027.
McCarthy brings a wealth of experience from his playing days with top clubs like Porto, Ajax, and Blackburn Rovers, as well as his coaching tenure at clubs such as Cape Town City, AmaZulu, and Sint-Truiden.
His most recent role was as a first-team coach at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag.
In his new role, McCarthy has expressed a strong commitment to leading Kenya to the 2026 World Cup and achieving success in continental competitions like the 2024 African Nations Championship and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Regarding his coaching staff, McCarthy has opted to work with his trusted South African assistants, including Vasili Manousakis (assistant coach), Moeneeb Josephs (goalkeeper trainer), and Pilela Maposa (performance analyst), all of whom were part of his team at AmaZulu .
This decision has led to speculation about the involvement of local coaches, but as of now, no official announcements have been made regarding the inclusion of Kenyan coaches in the technical bench.
McCarthy’s appointment follows the resignation of Turkish coach Engin Firat in December 2024 due to unpaid salary arrears . Since then, Francis Kimanzi has served as the interim coach.
