Tuesday, the 8thย of January 2012 –With the general elections fast approaching, the government has formed a new team to reign in those who are engaging in hate speech of any sort.

The team that will include the Head of Civil Service Francis Kimemia, Internal Security permanent security Mutea Iringo and Information PS Bitange Ndemo will monitor information spread through social media, FM stations and blogs to weed out those who are keen on spreading hateful information.
Kimemia said that he intends to zero in on blogs that are spreading a message of hate;
โ€œSome of the abusive, highly corrosive, divisive, tribal messages and blogs are criminal and this is the reason why we have formed a special team as we head to the election,โ€ he said.
โ€œWe are tracking all hate speakers, war mongers and peddlers without favouritism with a special focus on social media and few FM stations. We are leaving no stone unturned,โ€ he added.
Kimemia also revealed that the team will be working in tandem with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and National Steering Committee on Media Monitoring to fulfill its mission.
The secretary of the National Steering Committee on Media Monitoring, Mary Ombara, for her part said they were working with the CCK to stop the spread of hateful messages via the internet;
โ€œWe will work with CCK to trace computers used to send the vitriolic messages that will hopefully lead to the naming and shaming of the individuals involved,โ€ she said.
