Thursday, January 03, 2013 – Outspoken photo journalist Boniface Mwangi and the mind behind Ma Vultures has been honored among other people in the world after he was named the Global Post’s “Person of the year”.
Boni as he is fondly known by Kenyans was recognized for winning the Prince Claus Prize and was widely covered by the TIME magazine.
He was honored alongside Malawi President Joyce Banda, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and Gangnam style hit maker Psy. Also honored is Spain’s figure of human suffering late Amaia Egana who is said to have jumped to her death when people came to evict her from her house.
China national and legal activist Chen Guangcheng who is said to have escaped from house arrest in China and hid in US soil leading to controversy between the two countries was also honored.
Activist-cum-photographer Mwangi has been displaying the graphic images he took on post-election violence which has won him several awards including the prestigious Prince Claus Award.
Dubbed Picha Mtaani, the pictures capture the moments when Kenyans turned on each other in an orgy of unspeakable violence, just because they held divergent political views. Programme facilitators believe this jolting of memories, which Kenyans would rather forget, is necessary if we are to confront what ails our society.
