Prayers for President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto who are due to face trial at the International Criminal Court are set to dominate a homecoming rally for Senator Kipchumba Murkomen on Saturday.

Organisers of the event said President Kenyatta and Mr Ruto are scheduled to attend the rally at Iten grounds in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

It will be the first time President Kenyatta will be attending homecoming for MPs, Senators and Cabinet Secretaries after the March 4 elections.

Mr Murkomen is a key ally and political strategist for both President Kenyatta and Mr Ruto.

The youthful lawyer-cum politician also played a key role in the formation of URP and its joining the Jubilee Coalition. He has been a major defender of devolution.

Mr Murkomen is also in the political wing handling and advising President Kenyatta and Mr Ruto on the cases facing them at The Hague.

An opinion piece Mr Murkomen penned on the Sunday Nation last week is said to have convinced Jubilee coalition MPs to plot for the withdrawal of Kenya from the Rome Statute.

Parliament has been recalled to debate the matter Thursday.

Mr Murkomen said as a custodian of Kenyaโ€™s sovereignty, Parliament should convene as a matter of urgency to deliberate on the new twists on the ICC cases and to devise means of mitigating any negative impact arising thereof.

โ€œParliament should ensure the sovereignty and wishes of Kenyans as expressed in their choice of the UhuRuto presidency is respected,โ€ he said.

POLITICAL STATEMENTS

Political analysts say the homecoming could be used by the Jubilee leaders to make major political statements beforeย Mr Ruto flies out to The Hague on Mondayย for the beginning of his trial over charges of crimes against humanity.

Mr Murkomenโ€™s homecoming was earlier slated for August 31 but was postponed to allow President Kenyatta return from an overseas trip.

The re-scheduling was also meant to allow prayers for President Kenyatta and Mr Ruto, just before the deputy President’s trial starts next week.

In his opinion piece, Mr Murkomen said there is a building of consensus that the ICC, though conceived with good intentions, is quickly degenerating into a political institution more interested in political persecutions than justice.

He said ICC will soon outlive its usefulness and legitimacy if its handling of the Kenyan cases is anything to go by.

The Senator said history books hardly have situations where a head of state and commander in chief of armed forces is out of his office for a month without political unrests, political disquiet, leadership crisis and even coups.

He accused ICC of pushing the countryโ€™s presidency to the corner โ€œand will soon be plunging the country into constitutional and political crisis”.

Mr Murkomen said the ICC is under control of external forces hell bent to nail Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto and by design destabilise the nation.-nation.co.ke
