MOMBASA, KENYA: Muslim leaders in Mombasa have asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare his position on the homosexuality and lesbianism debate and hailed President Yoweri Museveni for signing a stringent law against the vice despite Western opposition.
But key human rights agencies remained silent on this matter amid reports that they feared losing Western aid if they support anti-homosexuality legislation. Yesterday they also accused US President Barack Obama of being obsessed with the gay rights and questioned his inclinations and also urged African nations to resist Western pressure to support same sex affairs and unions.
One Muslim leader suggested that Obama is motivated by the impulses of a “troubled county” andย has introduced a diversionary debate but added that Uhuru and African leaders should not sit on the fence in this matter for fear of losing Western aid. “He (Obama) has come out clearly to tell us that he has a wife and two daughters. Why is he so supportive of gay rights? He should tell us more,” said Sheikh Juma Ngao, the chairman of the Kenya National Muslim Advisory Council KEMNAC which guides Muslims on key moral, religious and socialย issues.
Ngao said many Kenyans areย increasingly scandalised by the fact that Obama whose father was Kenyan has made support for same sex relations a key plank of his foreign policy. And the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya said President Uhuru should declare support for “his brother Yoweri Museveni”and announce policy and legislative measures to combat homosexuality and lesbianism in Kenya. “President Uhuruย should be supportive of Yoweri Museveni and support enactment of laws to prevent spread of homosexuality,” said CIPK Organising Secretary Sheikh Mohamed Khalifa who added those engaged in the vices or lifestyle should be treated as criminals adding that those who cannot disengage should be taken to rehabilitation.
