Harambee Stars Captain Victor Mugubi Wanyama has been named as theย English Premier League African Player of the Month for September.
The former Celtics player saw off stiff competition fromย Victor Moses, Diafra Sakho and Mo Diame. The Kenyan midfielder has played a vital role in Southamptonโs superb start to the season and scored his first ever premier league goal against Swansea with a great piece of skill.
In a statement released by the organisers of the award, New African Soccer, Wanyamaย the first Kenyan player to play and score in the hugely competitive English Premier League will be given his award upon his return from international duty.
โIt was a tough choice as we had to also take into account, the performance of the Senegalese Diafra Sakho, who has been in explosive form since he arrived in England. Sakho has scored in virtually every game he played for West Ham and is as deserving of the award as Wanyamaโ,ย the statement added,ย โbut what swayed it in Wanyamaโs favour was his overall team work and contribution, especially at what many thought would be a difficult time for his club, having lost many first team players in the summerโ.
The award was introduced this season in August by New African Soccer to promote awareness and celebrate Africans in the UK as well as inspire younger ones who aspire to excel in football.
