The government of Saudi Arabia has said the Kenyan woman who died there last December committed suicide.
Saudi Arabia embassy deputy head of mission Ali Othman yesterday said the family of Ansila Charo is aware of the truth but has instead chosen to criminalise her employer.
Ansila’s body arrived in Mombasa last Tuesday.
Her brother Safari Charo said the woman in a video online being whipped in turn by four men while four others watch is Ansila.
In the clip, the woman is seen hanging upside down from the ceiling, screaming in an incomprehensible language.
However, Othman told the Star the person in the video is not Ansila but a Kurdish student who was being punished by his family for failing his exams.
The envoy said the embassy has established that Ansila had worked in Saudi Arabia for two years, sending money back home regularly.
“She returned to Saudi Arabia to work with another employer, but became very sad when she risked losing the contract during probation and hanged herself,” the envoy said.
“Though the family knows about that very well, they insist on criminalising the employer and fabricating stories.”
