Garissa attack families to get Sh100,000 each for funerals

CoffinsThe government will give families of the 147 people killed in the Garissa University College attack Sh100,000 each.

The money will be issued through funeral committees once all the bodies at Chiromo Mortuary, Nairobi are identified, said Defence CS Raychelle Omamo.

It will cater to transport and funeral expenses, Omamo said during a cabinet secretaries press briefing at Harambee House on Wednesday.

She added that the students who survived the attack will be absorbed into Moi University, Eldoret at no cost.

Counselling services have been moved from Nyayo National Stadium to Chiromo, she said.

Education CS Jacob Kaimenyi said the students will not return to the institution because of trauma. He said he will consult on disbanding the university.

Health CS James Macharia said 14 bodies were yet to be identified and urged parents to be patient to prevent wrong or multiple identification.

He said most of those injured in the incident have been treated and are awaiting discharge.

The families have been provided with standard coffins amid burial preparations.

The state will also pay mortuary and transportation costs while the University of Nairobi will counsel families for free before and after burial.
