Hundreds of youth protested in Nairobiโs CBD in defence of ย Devolution CS Anne Waiguruย over CBK probe on NYS funds.
The youth from Kibera and Mathare marched from Hurlingham to City Hall carrying placards warning Cord leader Raila Odinga to leave Waiguru alone.
Raila criticised the running of NYS on Saturday and asked for a probe into the running of the Devolution ministry.
The youth denied allegations that the institution does not pay them, saying they receive their money weekly through Mpesa from the National Bank of Kenya.
“Some of us who work from Monday to Friday are paid Sh1,600 while those working from Monday to Sunday are paid a total of Sh2,500,” one said.
On June 19, Waiguru said fraudsters had attempted to steal Sh826 million from the National Youth Service, but were unsuccessful and no money was lost.
Waiguru said she wrote to the Criminal Investigation Department asking them to investigate any suspicious transactions at the NYS.
She said cartels which had “controlled the NYS and crippled its functions are now fighting back” and trying to sabotage the new management.
Waiguru addressed a press conference at her office on Thursday, following a report on the Central Bank’s queries into huge payments at the NYS.
The Central Bank had written to the Devolution ministry questioning payments of hundreds of millions of shillings to private companies through the NYS.
