Nyamira Senator Kennedy Okong’o and Governor John Nyagarama traded accusations before two Senate Committees, exposing their personal differences.
Okong’o and Nyagarama were hosting members of the Sessional Committees on constitutional Implementation and that of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the office of the governor.
Controversy started when Okong’o rose towards the end of the meeting in what was viewed as a deliberate move to speak the last after Nyagarama.
“As much as we can root for development in the county, one particular worst thing is when leaders cannot work together,” said the Senator.
Okong’o further accused Nyagarama of running county development programs without consulting him or the people, something that elicited murmurs amongst all those who were present in the boardroom.
The senator further accused his governor of starting a university without properly involving the public through public participation.
“For instance the university which I hear is being started at Kiabonyoru, there were no consultations whatsoever because all that happened is that people were unhappy with your individual decisions and demonstrated against it, but you went on to force it on them,” alleged Okong’o.
It forced Nyagarama to rise and defend himself against the agitated Senator immediately after he was given chance to move a vote of thanks to the Senators.
“I thank everyone including my Senator, but just a word to him is that some issues must be reserved for right times and not when visitors are in the House,” said Nyagarama.
He said the County Government was dogged with numerous challenges amongst them leaders who were not willing to support him in his governance as well as imposing obstacles on development activities.
In a statement which seemingly referred to his Senator, Nyagarama said he was flexible to anyone who wanted to present his/her views.
“If I have fallen down, it doesn’t mean that you will walk away and leave me there but as a reasonable person, you will have to help me rise up again and move on,” said he.
The Senate committees that were comprising Siaya Senator James Orengo, Johnson Muthama (Machakos), Prof Wilfred Lesan (Bomet), Isaac Melly (Uasin Gishu) and nominated senators Joy Wendo and Daisy Kanainza were on a special mission in the Counties of Kericho, Homabay and Nyamira where they were checking on progress of implementation of pieces of legislation policies by the Senate in the areas of ICT, implementation of constitution, health and education.
