The best way to deal with al Shabaab is to cast a spell on them, Elgeyo Marakwet elders have said.

Led by Marakwet West elder Elias Rotich, they termed cursing an old Kalenjin practice employed as a last resort against killers.

“When Ugandan dictator Idi Amin claimed parts of Kenya in the 70s, Marakwet elders cursed him and his dictatorial rule collapsed dramatically,” Rotich said.

He asked the national and county governments to convene a meeting for the exercise saying Amin’s fate awaits the militia.

The senior member of the Marakwet Council of Elders said al Shabaab “do not deserve to live among peace-loving Kenyans”.

Speaking on Madaraka Day, Rotich said the elders will work with the experienced two clans to cast the spell.

“Teriki and Kobil clan elders are culturally permitted to curse when all avenues of fighting criminals have been exhausted,” he said.

“We are telling them to get ready to show al Shabaab what the elders’ curse can do to criminals.”

Rotich said curses are administered at sacred ceremonies on criminals who kill women and children.

He asked parents to monitor their children to keep them from getting recruited into the terror group.

His remarks come as the county is on high alert following the distribution in April of leaflets with warnings of imminent attacks on schools.
