Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was not aware that he owed Karen Country Club Sh22,337 because of his busy schedule, his aide has said.
“Kalonzo was in the United States for two weeks prior to the Obama weekend and has not visited the establishment since,” Dennis Kavisu said.
In a statement to newsrooms on Wednesday, Kavisu added that the club management had not notified the Cord co-principal of the debt.
“The membership of the club accommodates the principal and family members and thus a debt can be incurred without his knowledge,” Kavisu further said.
He said the issue was taken up with the club, which declined to comment, and the debt settled.
Kavisu was responding to reports that Kalonzo’s membership at the club had been terminated over the debt.
In a document seen by the Star, the club listed Kalonzo as a debtor, alongside 29 others, who were barred from using the club and enjoying privileges from July 1.
In an earlier phone call with the Star, Kavisu said the bill was “probably for a cup of tea over which Kalonzo cannot be barred from the club”.
He blamed the Jubilee administration which he said has sensed “the threat in Kalonzo’s potential for presidency in the 2017 election”.
