NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 27 – “I don’t need to be elected to any position or to get any office for me to prove my innocence…”are the words of deputy president William Ruto in reference to the ongoing case at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The DP dismissed claims by the opposition that he was pushing to ascend into the position of President so as to clear his name in The Hague, saying it was only a matter of time before his innocence could be proven.
“The case against President Uhuru Kenyatta collapsed not because he was President but because he was an innocent man. Eventually after the ups and downs, the twists and turns, the back and forth, my innocence will be proven,” he said.
Speaking during a church service at the PCEA Church in Bahati, Makadara Constituency, Ruto expressed confidence that his case would soon collapse as he was innocent.
Ruto and radio journalist Joshua arap Sang are the only Kenyans left from the famous ‘Ocampo six’ whose cases have since been terminated.
Ruto and Sang are facing crimes against humanity charges following the 2007/08 post election violence that left at least 1,300 people dead and over 600,000 others displaced.
He at the same time dismissed critics of the Jubilee Alliance party who have said the new outfit will not work as naysayers, saying come 2017 all the constant parties under the Jubilee coalition would merge, compete on a single political party and win the election.
“I don’t blame those who don’t believe that all the parties will be a single political party because they never believed that it was possible to reconcile communities and eliminate mistrust and have Kenyans work together and form a government that will unify people in 2007. They never believed it then, but God in heaven made it possible,” posed the DP.
He said are now gearing for the upcoming 2017 general election while taking the time to declare that he would back President Uhuru Kenyatta for his second term in the next election and battle it out with others in 2022 election.
He made the statement in reference to reports of cracks within the new outfit with the DPs United Republican Party (URP) said to be reluctant to join the Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP) for fear of losing relevance.
