The aim was to learn how to improve food quality and catering services for MPs at the Parliament restaurant / health club.

The trip drew criticism, with some calling it a misuse of public funds.

2018 – Committee on Members’ Services & Facilities

According to Kenyans.co.ke, MPs in the Committee on Members’ Services & Facilities spent a lot on per diem while touring UK, India, New Zealand, and Northern Ireland to benchmark catering / food / services.

This was not exactly the “Catering & Health Club Committee” by name, but a related committee (Members’ Services). The chair at the time was Ezekiel Machogu Ombaki.

The Parliament of Kenya website has a “Members Services & Facilities Committee” page listing multiple benchmarking visit reports (e.g., visit to the UK House of Commons).

12th Parliament (sessional report)

In the 6th session report of the 12th Parliament, there’s a section on “International Conferences, Attachments and Benchmarking Visits.”

Also, the 5th session report (12th Parliament) mentions similar committee benchmarking visits, but doesn’t detail a specific “catering/health club” mission.

Criticism of spend

There has been ongoing criticism about how much MPs spend on travel for benchmarking trips, including for food / catering improvements.

For example, in 2024 (per Business Daily), MPs continued to spend heavily on foreign travel.
