The Government now says plan to build the Dongo Kundu bypass to decongest the Likoni Ferry and Mombasa City are at advanced stage. This is the announcement made by President Uhuru Kenyatta who visited the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) Monday.

President Kenyatta said that the Dongo Kundu bypass will decongest Mombasa and offer an alternative route to the South Coast.

Another solution to the perennial traffic jams is the proposed construction of the Changamwe by-pass that will link the western part of Mombasa and the North Coast.

After meeting senior KFS officials at the headquarters, the President toured the parastatal’s offices at Likoni in Mombasa County. He also used the ferry when he crossed the Likoni channel.

He was accompanied by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala and Kenya Ferry Services officials.

The ferry services at Likoni have had several challenges as a result of frequent mechanical breakdowns owing to the old age of the vessels and their costly maintenance.
