Mutua wants Bensouda to closely monitor Ndeti’s Facebook page

MACHAKOS, Kenya, Jul 2 – Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has written to  the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Fatou Bensouda  urging her to closely monitor and act on alleged utterances, writings and social media activities linked to Wiper Democratic Movement’s gubernatorial aspirant Wavinya Ndeti to help prevent public incitement and emergence of electoral violence in the county.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader alleged Wavinya was engaging in campaigns that were likely to cause electoral violence by asking non-Machakos residents to leave the county.

He also requested the Chair of the National Cohesion & Integration Commission Francis Ole Kaparo and the IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati to also act on the contents of the letter that has also been copied to their offices.

“In the same vein, I would like to request Kaparo and Chebukati to join me in reassuring non-Machakos Kenyans working and residing in the county that the plan by Wavinya to evacuate them is not only unlawful but also it will not be tolerated at any time,” said Mutua.

He added that it was against national and international laws to internally displace people for political or any other gain.

“May they be from Makueni, Kitui or any part of Kenya. We must not allow these dangerous political games,” said Mutua.

He reiterated that people working and/or residing in Machakos County are peace-loving and want a peaceful election and expressed concern over allegations by  Wavinya  purporting there was a plot to burn government property.

Mutua said his opponent has alleged of the plot to raze documents and buildings in the County Government of Machakos to thwart criminal investigations.

“Nothing can be more derisive, absurd and farfetched as this claim,” said Mutua in a statement issued to journalists in Machakos by his Press Secretary Mutinda Mwanzia.

Last week, Ndeti wrote to the Inspector General of Police warning of the plot to raze county property by some employees to destroy financial and procurement records.

But Mutua rubbished Ndeti’s allegations terming them political and a cheap publicity stunt.

He said his government has performed superbly thanks to collaboration with all relevant organs of national and county government.

“In regard to integrity, I am the only governor to have invited the EACC to assist in establishing an ethical governance system in the County of Machakos,” said Mutua.

He added that investigations and queries have been welcome in order to enhance transparency and accountability in government operations.

Mutua said the sensational claim of arson in Ndeti’s letter can only therefore be construed to mean that there could be such a political and criminal plan by her or supporters to frustrate his government by burning the said building and documents.

“This is part of her scheme to justify the contents of the malicious letter so as to gain political mileage. This will be plain terrorism,” said Mutua.

He said arson, especially in regard to government property, is clearly an act of domestic terrorism, whose sole aim is to create fear and despondency among the peaceful citizens of Kenya.

“It is an act of civil provocation to strife and unrest, reminiscent of the 2007 election violence,” said Mutua.

He added that it was important that all security organs be mobilised to thoroughly and speedily investigate the arson allegations made by Ndeti to deter any terror attacks on his government.
