NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 21 – The fresh presidential election will now be held on October 26.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has said that the decision to change the date from the earlier gazetted October 17 date was taken to ensure the new poll conforms with the law and election regulations as ordered by the Supreme Court.
The decision follows a detailed ruling of the Supreme Court released Wednesday in which the court explained grounds upon which it nullified the presidential poll on September 1.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of Kenya rescheduled the 2017 presidential election to October 26, 2017, following the Supreme Court’s decision to annul the August 8 election results.
The court found that the IEBC had failed to properly verify the results and had not provided access to its computer servers to disprove allegations of hacking.
Initially, the IEBC had set the re-run for October 17. However, the Supreme Court’s detailed ruling indicated how the new elections should be conducted and the technology to be used, prompting the commission to push back the date by nine days.
In the re-run, incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Party won with 98.3% of the vote, defeating Orange Democratic Movement candidate Raila Odinga, who had withdrawn from the election, believing that the IEBC had not implemented necessary reforms.
The IEBC’s decision to reschedule the election was influenced by the need to address the Supreme Court’s concerns and to ensure a credible electoral process.
