The government is targeting to construct a million homes over the next five years as part of President Uhuru Kenyattaโs agenda to make housing affordable.
Out of this number, 800,000 affordable housing units will be delivered under public private partnerships (PPPS) while 200,000 will be social housing.
โThe implementation of the programme calls for involvement of all stakeholders and will encompass coming up with innovative delivery models,โ Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Arch. Aidah Munano said Tuesday.
She was speaking during the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) Awards of Excellence in Architecture 2017 at Villa Rosa Kempinski, Nairobi.
Ms Munano said housing is one of four sectors of focus in the countryโs transformational journey.
The others include enhancing manufacturing to contribute at least 15 per cent of GDP, provision of 100 per cent universal healthcare coverage under the NHIF scheme and complete food and nutrition security.
While speaking on behalf of Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, she said the ministry values its role in building research for the construction industry.
The forum brought together members of the construction industry fraternity including architects, quantity surveyors, engineers, construction project managers, landscape architects, environmental design consultants and town planners.
The AAK was also celebrating its 50-year anniversary.
