Musalia Mudavadi: “I Never Said Raila Betrayed Us”

Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi had denied saying that Raila Odinga betrayed Nasa coprincipals on his “Oath” day.

The Nasa coprincipal noted that all he did was explain the events that led to the People’s President’s swearing-in at Uhuru Park on January 30.

It had been reported that Mudavadi, during a closed-door meeting with Luhya elders over the weekend, said that Raila tricked his co-principals into missing the controversial oath-taking ceremony.

He reportedly claimed that Raila “sneaked” into Uhuru Park as the other principals waited for him that morning at a location in Nairobi believed to be the Serena Hotel to continue discussions that had extended late into the previous night.

According to Mudavadi, the principals had agreed to a last-minute meeting where many issues, including protocol and the nature of the presidential and deputy presidential oaths, were to be finalized.

Mudavadi allegedly made the claims on Sunday during the meeting with a section of Luhya MPs and the Western Elders’ Council at Francis Atwoli’s home.

But the Cotu Secretary Genera said ANC leaders did not attack Raila during the meeting at his Khwisero home but only explained that some things were not clear at the time.

“He [Mudavadi] told us what happened. We agreed that he will remain the Luhya spokesman and the best candidate to back for presidency in 2022,” Atwoli said.

Speaking to The Star on phone yesterday, Mudavadi denied making the allegations against Raila.

“I never said Raila betrayed us. I would never use such words.”

The claims of Raila’s alleged betrayal come in the wake of simmering unease within the Opposition coalition despite the show of normalcy as affiliate parties begin to switch their focus to the 2022 race.
