The Gikuyu Cultural Association has supported the call by Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba ufor financially endowed men to take up more wives.
During a special delegates conference in Naivasha over the weekend, the more than 200 members endorsed the call, terming it a step in the right direction.
In a statement read on their behalf by the association’s Secretary-General Joseph King’ori, the elders said that as custodians of heritage and culture, they have the moral duty to guide the youth.
“We are fully behind the call for polygamy but only for those able to support such families. It is optional,” he said.
HYPOCRISY
The lawmaker caused a stir last week when she said polygamy would offer a solution to alcoholism and the street families‘ menace.
Mr King’ori said the cultural leaders came up with the resolution after seven hours of deliberations.
“It is not a standard rule for every community member to be in a polygamous relationship,” he said.
The association’s chairman, Mr Kigochi Waimiri, accused those opposed to polygamy of hypocrisy.
“Some of them are in several secret relationships. All what we want is to see the unions legalised,” he said.
The elders said it is shame that most illicit relationships only come to the fore when one party dies, leading to protracted legal battles.
SENIOR ELDERS
Mr Waimiri added that the association would be restructured, with national office bearers being referred to as athuri a mathati (senior elders) instead of athamaki (kings) “to reflect the reality on the ground”.
At the same time, the association hailed the unity deal between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
The elders said they are ready to join the two leaders to promote peace and cohesion in the country.

If men can get more wives, perhaps women should be calling for women to get more husbands since most of the wives of Gikuyus need more support from their one husband since they are redistributing the labor of their wife to other wives now. You men are the hypocrites and you only care about one thing–your happiness, not our wife’s happiness–your’s! I wish someone would hack Ashley again so that all “secret” affairs could be brought into the light of day as well as these secret marriages of men who say they are men of honor. So, do you think that making it legitimate by calling it marriage will do so? You are wrong because this will be the downfall of your society and all because of your lust–when shame is openly practiced in the broad daylight and children have no fathers around–they will despise your leadership. Your lust will be your downfall.
Should also mention that Gikiyu men in the Diaspora should take particular care if feeling loosey goosey and determining to take another wife or wives without divorcing the first one since this could land them in a boatload of trouble if they do this in countries such as the USA and most all other monogamous countries in the world. This is against the law in America.
So, if you want to go abroad and be a dual citizenship or want to be a permanent resident even or already are, better divorce your other wives and keep only one or face deportation. Oh, we know you wouldn’t want to have to support your divorced wives, so just better stay in KEA since you might end up being deported there anyway if you break the laws of the land abroad. Just so you don’t accidentally end up with a one-way ticket home. Better enjoy your harems at home.
Sorry, it is possible perhaps that some of the Gikiyu elders are Muslims, so I apologize since they would have a right to marry multiple women per their religion. So, if they are well this is not a problem since obviously their wives would also be under the same religious belief and understanding. But what about Gikuyu women who are Christians and are married to these men who have now been encouraged to go against their Christian faith. Titus particular warns elders in teh church from taking more than one wife. Also, in the book of Malachi, the priests (ministers) were told that God did not approve of their practice of abandoning the wife of their youth. Obviouslly, they did not divorce their wife but they were admonished for abandoning the wife of their youth and God said he would not hear their prayers. Oh, and God is not the white man’s religion by the way. He is Father and Creator of all men and women of all nations. There is one God and one race–the Human Race. But if the Gikuyu Elders are Muslim, then please forgive me if you are speaking to your Muslim Brothers because you have every right to do so. But if you are speaking to other than these, perhaps you should go back and read the fine print of the Marriage Act because there is such a thing as Christian Marriage still adn you might be encouraging Gikiyu men to go beyond the Constitutional rights of Christian women to stay within a Christian marriage. If they do what the elders are suggesting, it would not be a Christian marriage. They should check with their pastors first, not the elders.
