A suicidal Facebook user was found dead in a hotel room in Mtwapa, Kilifi County.
Owen Maina Macharia was about to turn 28 when he took his life. According to a family member Daniel Kabii who spoke toย Nairobi News,ย it was too late when they discovered his suicidal Facebook posts.
In one of the posts, the deceased, a Marketing graduate said: โSolution to all problems is death. No man, no problems.โ
Owenโs cry for help earned him ridicule from some of his โfriendsโ on the social media platform.
One friend in particular urged him on saying โJiue tukuzike basi.โ Owen in a quick rejoinder asked him not to attend his burial. That was on January 15, 2019.
Days later, he would ask his employer for a day off. He never returned.
Kabii further explained to the blog that Owen asked to take the 28thย off of work. His boss was alarmed when three days later, Owen was nowhere to be seen.
This forced the employer to contact his family who had not seen him for days. It is then that the search started at his house in Mwihoko, along Thika Road.
Here they found his phone and some packed clothes. The next stop was at his Bank where a relative had transferred Sh50,000 for a business venture. A look into his bank activity showed that he had withdrawn money from Mtwapa.
Before hanging himself he borrowed a phone from a guard with which he called his sister to bid her goodbye.
โOn Saturday early morning he (Maina) had called one of his sisters using what we later learnt was a security guardโs number. He told the sister goodbye, telling her to bid their parents goodbye on his behalf. The sister tried asking him to let her know what he was going through and where he was but he refused to disclose and disconnected the call,โ Kabii toldย Nairobi News.
The deceasedโs cousin would later locate him at a hotel in Mtwapa where he had stayed for three days, the guard from whom he borrowed a phone divulged.
They broke into Owenโs hotel room only to find his body hanging from the bathroom ceiling with his belt around his neck. He had also consumed rat poison.
Owenโs remains were transferred to Kenyatta University mortuary and will be laid to rest today at his parentโs rural home in Mukurweini, Nyeri County.
