Authorities in South Australia have launched a Major Crime investigation into the death of Kenyan national Caleb Leriano, after detectives determined that the injuries he suffered were not consistent with a vehicle crash initially reported in Morphett Vale.
The case, which initially appeared to be a single-vehicle accident, has now taken a dramatic turn. Investigators suspect Leriano may have been assaulted before the crash.
What Happened in Morphett Vale
Emergency services were called to Golflands View in Morphett Vale, South Australia, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11. This followed reports that a red 2003 BMW sedan had collided with a stobie pole.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found Caleb Leriano with critical injuries inside the vehicle. Authorities initially believed the injuries resulted from the crash.
However, after a forensic examination, investigators determined the severity and nature of Leriano’s injuries did not match those typically associated with a collision of that nature.
Detectives Believe Assault Occurred Before Crash
According to Detective Inspector Andrew Macrae, the injuries sustained by Leriano suggest he may have been assaulted prior to the vehicle collision.
Investigators believe the Kenyan man had driven to the area near Sapphire Reserve for a planned meeting shortly before the crash occurred.
Police now suspect that the incident may have involved other individuals. Additionally, the collision with the stobie pole may have happened after the alleged assault.
Authorities have clarified that the case does not appear to be a random attack. However, detectives are actively interviewing several individuals as part of the investigation.

His sudden and suspicious death has shocked both the Kenyan diaspora community in Australia and his family back in Kenya. They are now awaiting answers as the investigation continues.

South Australia Police are urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity or captured dashcam footage in the area to come forward.
