Mercy Nyambura’s journey to pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science, specializing in Artificial Intelligence at the University of South Dakota, is a powerful story of persistence, growth, and strategic resilience.

Hailing from Kiambu County, Kenya, Mercy began her academic path with a diploma in Information Technology at Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology.

Determined to advance further, she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, graduating with Second Class Honors, Upper Division. Her steady progression reflects a firm belief that humble beginnings do not define ultimate outcomes.

Master’s degree

Originally, a Master’s degree was not in her immediate plans. However, while working at a company building Africa’s first AI factory, her passion for artificial intelligence deepened. As she researched local postgraduate options, she realized many programs were heavily theoretical. Mercy desired a more hands-on, practical learning experience—an aspiration that led her to explore opportunities in the United States.

Her application process progressed swiftly. She received admission within days and secured her I-20 shortly after. In July 2025, however, her first visa attempt was denied. Instead of giving up, Mercy deferred her admission to the Spring intake, strengthened her preparation, and approached the process with renewed clarity.

On December 10, 2025, during her second interview, she successfully secured her visa.

Mercy’s journey from diploma to Master’s—and from denial to approval—demonstrates resilience, thoughtful reassessment, and unwavering belief in her goals. Her story is a reminder that setbacks are not endings, but stepping stones to stronger comebacks.
