From Setbacks to Success: Dickson Kahora’s US Journey

Dickson Kahora’s journey from Kiambu, Kenya, to pursuing a Master’s degree in the United States reflects resilience, faith, and a clear sense of purpose. With a background in Land Resource Planning and Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), his academic foundation set the stage for his next chapter at Saint Louis University, where he will pursue a Masters in Geographical Information Science and Cartography.

His ambition to study abroad had been long-standing. Inspired by stories and experiences of others, he envisioned gaining global knowledge and bringing it back home to contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s development. This vision remained steady, even during uncertain moments after completing his undergraduate studies when securing employment proved challenging.

His breakthrough came through a connection within his family network, introducing him to the International Scholars Program. He began his journey in March 2024, committing himself fully to the process. Although he prepared extensively for the GMAT, the requirement was eventually waived, allowing him to proceed with applications.

The journey, however, was not without setbacks. His initial applications to several universities were unsuccessful, a period that tested his patience and determination. Despite the disappointment, he remained focused, trusting that the right opportunity would come at the right time.

That moment arrived when he applied again and received admission offers. Choosing Saint Louis University for its alignment with his goals, Dickson moved forward with renewed confidence.

His story stands as a reminder that persistence and preparation can turn setbacks into stepping stones.
