Photos:Family and Friends Bid Farewell to Kenyan Professor in Worcester, MA

Professor Raphael J. NjorogeWorcester, MA—Family and friends bid farewell to iconic Professor Raphael Joseph Njoroge of Mang’u, Kenya over the weekend. They paid their last respects to the 75 year old academic, celebrating a life well lived, a life dedicated to the service of others and the betterment of humanity.

A Funeral Mass was held for the professor at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church on Saturday. It was followed by a memorial service on Sunday at Worcester State University, where he taught for many years following his exile to the United States in the mid 1990’s.

 

Family, friends and colleagues spoke of his unwavering integrity, dignity, humility, and astonishing generosity. He helped Kenyans gain access to some of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in the United States. He also established strategic partnerships between universities in the U.S., Kenya and Namibia.

He was the first African headmaster of Mang’u High School which he moved to its current location on Thika Road. He was a popular scholar and teacher at Kenyatta University during his 14 year tenure at the school. Prof. Njoroge served as Chairman of the Department of Educational Foundations, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Director of the Bureau of Educational Research at Kenyatta University.

 

His love for teaching, his compassion and his willingness to help countless numbers of people were common testimonies given by those who knew him in attendance at events over the weekend.  “We shall remember him for all the great things that he did for us.” said his sister, Julian K. Miru. “He opened doors and he made sure we went to the best schools and the best colleges both here and in Kenya. His legacy will live forever” said Miru.

 

“Our father lived a full and fulfilling life” said John Miru Njoroge, the professor’s eldest son. Njoroge said, “He made his mark on this world and he inspired many bright shining lights of hope. He made an appreciable difference in people’s lives and we will miss him dearly while living to emulate and elevate his legacy of love, academics and service.”

 

A great Kenyan patriot has fallen. Professor Raphael J. Njoroge was cremated today (2 December 2014) according to his wishes. May his warm and loving soul rest in eternal peace.
