The tragic military helicopter crash in the Sindar area, near the border of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet, that claimed the lives of senior military officials, including Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla, is not the first.

Several such incidents have occurred across the country in recent times.

On November 20, 2023, two separate incidents shook Wajir County. A military helicopter, on a relief food supply mission, crashed during take-off in Buna, Wajir North, while another civilian chopper went down at Wajir International Airport en route to Arbajahan to deliver exam materials.

Earlier that same month, two Kenya Defence Forces pilots were hospitalized after their chopper crashed in the Kisamis area, Kajiado West. This followed the November 9 incident where a Kenya Air Force Fennec helicopter struck a power cable en route to Nairobi.

In July 2023, a chopper crashed in Chemolingot Stadium, Baringo County, carrying officials accompanying Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on a security tour of the volatile area. Fortunately, all onboard, including government officials, escaped unharmed despite the helicopter hitting a tree during take-off.

In June 2021, a military chopper on a routine training mission crashed in Kajiado, resulting in the loss of at least 10 Kenya Defence Forces soldiers. Prior to the crash, the helicopter circled for over 20 minutes as those aboard attempted to evacuate.
