The first ever elaborate Kikuyu Ngurario ceremony professionally documented from start to finish. A ngurario is the final part of the kikuyu wedding to formalize the marriage under the Gikuyu rites. In this video, the Hiuhu family of Olkeri Ngong hosts their daughter who has been married for many years but never completed the wedding ceremony. Though the husband died few years ago, Virginia Thira Njoroge is obligated to complete the ceremony to open the way for her children to do the same since they cannot complete their wedding rites before she does. The ceremony involves cutting a goat’s right “arm” (guoko); entrails (gitungo kia mara); ribs (inkengeto) and two kidneys (higo) among other rites. The husband is represented by Virginia’s Grandson who is named after the grandfather.
