A recent report has brought to light the grave situation of Gloria Wairimu Wachira, a 19-year-old Kenyan domestic worker currently hospitalized in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

She is reportedly being held captive by her employer, who has denied her requests to return to Kenya. Wachira alleges that she has been subjected to physical abuse and forced to work for multiple employers without additional compensation.

She claims that her employer has threatened to blacklist her passport and has been violent toward her since she expressed a desire to leave. Despite her pleas for help, there has been no immediate response from the Kenyan authorities.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of abuse faced by Kenyan domestic workers in Saudi Arabia. Many workers have reported being subjected to physical and sexual abuse, unpaid wages, and harsh working conditions.

The Kafala system, which ties workers’ legal status to their employers, has been criticized for enabling such exploitation.

While Saudi Arabia has made some reforms to ease restrictions on domestic workers, rights groups argue that more needs to be done to protect these workers.

The Kenyan government and various human rights organizations continue to advocate for the protection and repatriation of workers like Wachira.

However, challenges persist due to the legal and systemic barriers in place. The international community has also raised concerns about the treatment of migrant workers in Saudi Arabia, urging for comprehensive reforms to ensure their safety and dignity.

For those seeking to assist or learn more about the situation, organizations such as Haki Africa and the Kenyan embassy in Riyadh may provide support and information.
