Nairobi city residents prefer Sonko for Senator position

Makadara MP Gidion Mbuvi a.k.a Sonko is the preferred candidate for the Nairobi County senatorโ€™s position if polls were held today.

Out of a list of seven aspirants who have declared interest in the seat, the survey shows Sonko is likely to emerge the winner with 41 per cent support.

His closest opponent would be ODMโ€™s Regional Development Minister Fred Gumo with 14 per cent of the respondents rooting for him while business magnate Jimnah Mbaru follows with one per cent.

Others who have declared interest in the seat, Mr John Macharia and Assistant minister Elizabeth Ongoro, would also get one per cent of the votes while Public Health Minister Beth Mugo and Assistant minister Margaret Wanjiru have one per cent each. Mugo has, however, dropped out of the race citing health problems while Wanjiru is contesting for the governor position.

However, 38 per cent of the respondents do not know who they will vote for according to the polls.

Interestingly, when the same respondents were asked spontaneously by being given the list of the aspirants, Sonko again emerged as the preferred candidate with 59 per cent rooting for him.

Gumo came second with 25 per cent, Macharia two per cent while Mugoya had one per cent. The other candidates are lumped together with six per cent each while those undecided were six per cent.

According to the poll, out of the 41 per cent that preferred Sonko for senator, 44 per cent are men while 38 per cent are women.

On the other hand, out of the 14 per cent that prefer Gumo for the seat, 16 per cent are men while 11 per cent are women.

For Jimnah Mbaru the one per cent are all men, for Macharia the one per cent are women while Ongoroโ€™s two per cent are all men with the same case applying to Wanjiru while Mugoโ€™s supporters were all women.

Out of the 21 per cent who donโ€™t know who to vote for, 15 per cent are men while 27 per cent are women.

While announcing his candidature for the seat a month ago, Sonko seemed to have confidence he would win the favour of voters when he said it was only a matter of time before he takes the senatorship through a TNA ticket.

โ€œI am waiting for the General Election to be confirmed by Nairobians as their first senator. I know my competitors, I respect them, but I think they will not give me stiff competition,โ€ he said.
