She will vie for the right to succeed her father, Mutula Kilonzo, and represent Makueni constituents in the Senate.

Ms Kilonzo will battle it out with, among others, former assistant minister Harun Mwau and former Kibwezi MP Phillip Kaloki.

Mr Mwau will run on a Party of Independent Candidates of Kenya (PICK) ticket while Prof Kaloki will fly the National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) flag.

Jane Kitundu of the Labour Party of Kenya (LPK) was also cleared by the IEBC on Wednesday.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Mr Kilonzo on April 27.

The by-election is slated for July 22.

On Tuesday, The National Alliance (TNA) claimed thatย Ms Kilonzo was not a registered voter and urged the IEBC to block her candidature.

โ€œIt has come to the attention of TNA that Ms Diana Kethi Kilonzo, the Wiper Democratic Party candidate for the Makueni County Senatorial by-election, is not a registered voter,” the letter addressed to IEBC chairman Isaac Hassan read in part.

However,ย Wiper dismissed the claims saying TNA was in a “panic” due to Ms Kilonzo’s popularity.

Chairman David Musila said Ms Kilonzo was a registered voter “somewhere in Kenya”.

“She is a registered voter somewhere in Kenya, but certainly not in Makueni. It is not the business of TNA to decide who is qualified and who is not. She is our candidate,โ€ said Mr Musila on Wednesday during a news conference in Nairobi.
