Could there be trouble looming in the Deputy President’s office? A Member of Parliament is claiming that there have been mass transfers and sackings since William Ruto took over what were once the offices of the prime minister.

Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed is seeking a statement from the government and as NTV’s Mercy Juma reports, the house majority leader Aden Duale promised to issue a statement on Tuesday next week.

Kenyan Members of Parliament (MPs) have recently accused President William Ruto of orchestrating the dismissal of civil servants and government officials affiliated with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

This move is part of a broader effort by Ruto’s administration to restructure the government by removing individuals associated with the previous regime.

In December 2022, MPs from the Kenya Kwanza coalition urged Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to dismiss state officers who had campaigned against Ruto during the August general elections.

They argued that these officials, who had supported Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, should be removed from their positions. The MPs also called for action against top parastatal heads involved in anti-Kenya Kwanza campaigns. While some officials were pressured into resigning, others faced investigations into their conduct.

Notably, former Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti and Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission commissioners Juliana Cherera and Justus Nyang’aya resigned following mounting pressure and criticism.

Raila Odinga has expressed concerns over the widespread sacking of civil servants who served under Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration. He criticized the dismissals, stating that many civil servants were being laid off without justification, leading to job insecurity.

Odinga also alleged that some individuals were dismissed due to tribal biases, with certain tribes being favored in new appointments.

The reshuffling of government officials has sparked debates within the political landscape. While some view it as a necessary step to align the government with the current administration’s agenda, others perceive it as politically motivated purging.

The situation continues to evolve, with ongoing discussions about the implications of these actions on governance and public service in Kenya.
