Where should I take my tithes? Since I minister to people from different countries who live in Diaspora, I get this question over and over. People want to know whether they are free to decide to whom and where they should give their tithe. They often ask, “Should I send my tithe to any church I choose?” They also ask, “Should I send my tithes to my church in my village or to any church in my home country?”

In today’s passage, the Lord gives a clear answer to this question.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Malachi 3:10a

The Lord says bring the whole tithe into the storehouse – which is His house. Here we learn two things. First, we are to give the whole tithe. This means we are not to split the tithes. Secondly, the tithe is to be taken to the House of the Lord.

Why do we take the whole tithes to the house of the Lord?

That there may be food in my house.

If you can recall, the Levites who ministered in the Temple of God were not allotted any land. They were to receive their food and sustenance for their families from the tithes given to the house of God. This is why the Lord says that there may be food in my house.

  1. If you were struggling with where to take the tithes, now you know. Take it to the house of God. But that does not mean any house of God. Or to use contemporary terms, it is to the church of God. But not any church of God! It is to the church that you attend – your home church. Your church takes care of your spiritual needs. Therefore, you should take your tithes there so as to help support those who minister to you.
  2. For those who live in Diaspora away from their homeland, the temptation is to split the tithes and send part of it to your home country. But it is clear from this passage that we are to take the “whole” tithe to the House of God. No splitting!
  3. God funds His programs through tithes and offerings that we take to His church. That means if you fail to take your tithes and offerings to the House of God, then you are derailing the work of God.  Just imagine what God thinks of you if His work is suffering or delayed because you failed to pay your tithes? While God will find a way for His work to progress, you will not go unpunished.
  4. On the other hand, the servants of God in the church depend on tithes and offerings for subsistence. If there are not enough of these, then they do not get what they need to eat or feed their families. Imagine what God thinks of you when His servants go hungry because you are not taking the tithes and offerings to His House.
  5. My experience and observation of other servants of God has shown me that God will always provide for His servants through other means. They will never go hungry. But woe unto them that force God to look for other ways to feed His servants. God will never leave them unpunished. He never takes this lightly. Notice that in verse 9, the punishment is upon the whole nation.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse,

That there may be food in my house.

Malachi 3:10a

Since it is this clear,

This is why I say
