A 25-year-old woman is being held at a camp in Saudi Arabia after she ran away from a house she had been promised a job as a house girl.
Esther Chege travelled to Riyadh on September 28 through a job recruitment agent only identified as Monica. She was allegedly picked from an airport in Riyadh by an agent upon arrival and taken to a house full of men.
“I had been promised work for a couple as a househelp. I left the house immediately I realised it was full of men,” chege said.
She told the Star on the phone she was arrested on the streets by security agents and locked up in the camp.
Through an sms from Saudi Arabia on Saturday, Chege complained of hunger and her deteriorating health.
“Mimi niko msick sana ambia Monica wakiwa na mama NJane wapige simu huku waseme nirudi (I am very sick. Tell Monica and Mama Njane to call Saudi Arabia to say I should be allowed to return to Kenya,” she said.
Her sister Mary Nduati said the agent who recruited Njoki does not pick her calls.
“We are in agony. My sister has been calling me complaining of harsh living conditions in Saudi Arabia,” she said.
The family is appealing to Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi to intervene.
Last month, Kambi ordered vetting of all recruitment agents.
