A section of Homa Bay youths attacked acting county ODM chair Monica Amollo on Monday as she tried to endorse Raila for the Senate seat.
The youths attacked Amollo at Homa Bay Tourist hotel where she led several delegates in the botched endorsement.
Amollo however denied that the incident occurred at a press briefing at the ODM office in Homa Bay town.
โLooking at me, do you think I can be chased from a hotel? I just went for breakfast but I do not know about the incident,โ posed Amollo.
Amollo and the delegates endorsed Raila as a suitable candidate for the seat during the press briefing.
In a statement read by ODM’s Kasipul Kabondo branch secretary general, Ronix Odida, the delegates argued that Raila as senator would protect the devolution he championed.
Raila however declined to vie for the seat at a press conference in Nairobi on Monday, saying he wants to concentrate on “the bigger task” of revamping ODM.
The proposal for him to succeed Otieno Kajwang, who died in November, had been opposed by a section of MCAs who said “we cannot allow some leaders to pretend that he (Raila) can bend that low to vie for a senatorial seat. He is more than that level”.
MCAs Julius Gaya and Sylvance Wanjala, for Central Karachuonyo and Kanyikela wards respectively, said the seat is meant for locals noting that:
โWe have our own capable and able sons and daughters who can be senators. We do not need leaders from other counties to come and inherit the proposal by a section of ODM leaders for the former senatorโs position.”
The proposal had resulted in division within the county.
The Luo Council of Elders and several leaders, following a meeting at a Homa Bay hotel on Sunday, earlier resolved to hold a public demonstration against it on Wednesday.
