The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set the Kajiado Central parliamentary by-election for Monday, March 16, 2015.
The seat fell vacant after the resignation of outgoing MP Major-General (Rtd) Joseph Nkaissery on December 19, 2014.
Maj-Gen (Rtd) Nkaissery resigned as an MP after he was appointed and sworn in as the new Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government.
In a statement released on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, IEBCโs Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Tabitha Mutemi said those wishing to vie for the seat as independent candidates should submit their symbols and seek clearance from the Registrar of Political Parties by January 26, 2015.
At the same time, political parties wishing to participate in the elections must finalise their nominations and determine intra-party disputes arising from party nominations by January 29, 2015.
Nomination papers will be submitted to IEBC on February 16 and 17, 2015 and the official campaign period will begin on February 18, 2015 and end on March 14, 2015, the IEBC statement said.
Kajiado Central Constituency consists of five County Assembly Wards (CAWs) with a total of 39,545 registered voters.
The National Alliance (TNA) has already expressed interest in capturing the seat from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Maj-Gen (Rtd) Nkaissery was elected as Kajiado Central MP on an ODM ticket in the 2013 General Elections.
Following Nkaissery’s nomination as Interior Cabinet Secretary, ODM leader Raila Odinga demanded that his party be allowed to field a candidate for the Klajiado Central seat unopposed.
