Supporters of Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko have lauded President Uhuru Kenyatta for what they called an “endorsement” of the senator to challenge governor Evans Kidero in 2017.

A video of the saying: “Let Sonko and Kidero square it out in theย Governor’sย race.ย It’sย you people who will elect the Governor and once elected, let them respect each other and work,” has been doing rounds on social media.

Uhuru made the remarksย on Wednesday while launching the dualling of Ngong road.

Former Kamukunji MP Simon Mbugua said Sonko’s camp will work hard to ensure he is the Jubilee Party’s flag bearer.

Several city MCAs who requested anonymity said they support Sonko to be the next Governor.

“For now, we will not publicly say we support Sonko. This is because saying so will lead some people to victimise us. But Sonko is our candidate and we will ensure he wins. Kidero has really let us down and its time to send him home,” they said.

A total of eight candidates have joined the race to oust Evans Kidero as the Nairobi Governor.

They include Adopt-A-Light CEO Esther Passaris, former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, and Dagoreti MP Dennis Waweru.

Also interested are Water CS Eugene Wamalwa, former National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende, and Cord leader Raila Odinga’s former aide Miguna Miguna.

But Sonko enjoys support from Nairobi’s informal settlements, which makes up a majority of the voters.

The Senator has been engaging the residents of informal settlements through his Sonko Rescue team by providing free hearses, ambulances and fire fighting engines.

According to the management of the Sonko rescue team, at least 300 dead bodies have been taken to rural areas, including Kisii, Kisumu, Kakamega, Busia, Bungoma, Muranga, Nyeri, Kiambu, Meru among others.
