One person was reportedly killed after a group of hired goons attempted to disrupt a music extravaganza presided over by Kiambu Governor William Kabogo.
The event had been organised in Thika to mark the launch of a music album composed by popular Kikuyu gospel musician Muigai wa Njoroge.
Kabogo spoke shortly before the event could come to an end and warned that some of his opponents had hired goons to cause chaos at the event.
Witnesses reported that shortly after Kabogo left the venue, a group of about 30 youth armed with crude weapons started robbing and attacking fans and passersby outside the stadium where the event had taken place.
As the chaos escalated, police were forced to lob teargas and fire live ammunition in the air to disperse the rowdy thugs.
Some of Kabogoโsย supportersย who were at Thika Stadium fought back the thugs as the scene spilt over to Thikaโs CBD in a cat and mouse game that lasted for more than two hours.
Tens were injured while some witnesses claimed that one person had died.
Thika West police boss Erastus Muthamia did not refute the claims but added that the police were unaware of any death as no reports had been made.
Muthamia, however, clarified that his officers were investigating the allegation.
The incident took place at the same time that a similar attack was happening in Silibwet Stadium against Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto.
Ruto had attended a football match that turned chaotic as his Mashinani party supporters clashed with those of the Jubilee party.
The commotion resulted in tens of injuries including a facial injury on the area governor.
It is not clear what hit Ruto as he insisted that he was hit by a tear gas canister on the face, a claim disputed by his County Commissioner who insisted the governor was hit by a stone thrown by an angry fan.
The governor’s injury has seen him admitted at the Nairobi Hospital and is further expected to fly out to South Africa for specialised treatment.
