Africa Ranking: Kenya Has 42 Billionaires – Super-Wealthy People

Kenya has 42 individuals with net worth exceeding Sh3 billion ($30 million), according to the latest Knight Frank Global Wealth Report released on Wednesday.

The report further indicates that approximately 9,600 Kenyans fall into the broader ultra-wealthy category, highlighting the continued concentration of wealth in East Africa’s largest economy despite ongoing economic pressures.

Kenya Ranks Fourth in Africa for Ultra-Wealthy Individuals

Within Africa, Kenya is ranked fourth in the number of individuals worth more than Sh3 billion.

  • South Africa leads the continent with 1,033 ultra-wealthy individuals
  • Nigeria follows with 724
  • Morocco ranks third with 215
  • Kenya comes fourth with 42

This ranking underscores Kenya’s position as one of Africa’s most significant wealth hubs, driven largely by banking, real estate, manufacturing, agriculture, and diversified family-owned enterprises.

Global Wealth Snapshot: US Dominates Ultra-Rich Rankings

On the global stage, the United States continues to dominate, hosting 240,575 ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWIs)—more than Europe and Asia combined and nearly half of the global total.

Other leading countries include:

  • China – 61,587 UHNWIs
  • Germany – 23,078
  • France – 18,776

According to the report, the global population of ultra-high net worth individuals grew by 6 percent over the past year, reaching 513,244 people worldwide, with over 31,000 new UHNWIs added during the period.

Rising Wealth in Kenya Driven by Methodology Change

Knight Frank notes that the overall number of UHNWIs increased sharply compared to its 2018 report, largely due to a methodology update that now includes the value of primary residential homes when calculating net worth.

This adjustment significantly expanded the pool of individuals classified as ultra-wealthy, particularly in countries with rapidly appreciating real estate markets such as Kenya.

Kenyan UHNWIs Focus on ESG and Healthcare Investments

The report highlights a shift in investment priorities among Kenya’s wealthy individuals:

  • 67 percent of Kenyan UHNWIs now consider ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) policies when making investment decisions
  • Growing interest in healthcare facilities and retirement-focused real estate
  • Increased appetite for commercial property investments, especially in healthcare and lifestyle-related developments

These trends mirror global patterns where sustainability and long-term social impact are becoming key drivers of capital allocation.

Who Are Kenya’s Wealthiest Families?

While the Knight Frank report does not name specific individuals, previous wealth rankings have consistently identified prominent families and business leaders among Kenya’s richest.

These include the families of former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi, as well as the late cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott.

Renowned Kenyan business tycoons featured in past wealth reports include Vimal Shah, Chris Kirubi, and Manu Chandaria.
