Harrison Gitau’s journey to pursuing a Master’s degree in the United States is a clear example of how the right guidance, planning, and determination can turn a distant dream into reality.
His introduction to the International Scholars Program came through a family connection. Seeing his cousin successfully secure an opportunity to study at Grand Valley State University gave him confidence that the same path was achievable. That familiarity made the process feel real and attainable, reinforcing the idea that others could follow the same journey.
One of the key advantages he found in ISP was the variety of universities and programs available. Despite not having a background in IT, he was able to identify a program in health bioinformatics that aligned with both his current experience and future career goals. This flexibility allowed him to confidently pivot into a new field.
Finances, often a major barrier, did not stop him. With access to financing solutions, he realized that starting the process required only commitment and a manageable initial contribution. He registered in 2023 without having the full amount and gradually saved overtime, completing his payment by the end of 2024.
Alongside this, he prepared academically by taking the GMAT, strengthening his application. He later applied to two universities: Grand Valley State University and the University of Delaware; and received acceptance from both. Choosing Grand Valley, he proceeded with the funding process.
Harrison’s story highlights that with patience, structure, and expert guidance, studying in the U.S. is within reach.
