NAIROBI, Kenya — March 6, 2026 — Dozens of Kenyans stranded in the United Arab Emirates have safely returned home after Kenya Airways successfully operated a special evacuation flight from Dubai to Nairobi on March 5, 2026, marking the airline’s first repatriation mission following escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The emergency operation came after several days of regional airspace disruptions triggered by military escalation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. This escalation forced the temporary closure of multiple air corridors across the Middle East. As a result, thousands of travelers were left stranded.
Kenya Airways Conducts Special Evacuation Mission
Kenya Airways dispatched an outbound special flight from Nairobi to Dubai on March 4, 2026. This action positioned the aircraft to carry stranded passengers back to Kenya. The return evacuation flight, identified as Flight KQ305, departed Dubai on March 5, 2026. It successfully transported Kenyan nationals and other affected travelers to Nairobi.
Unlike normal passenger services, the flights were high-priority emergency operations. These were organized under tight logistical constraints.
Kenya Airways reportedly secured limited time-slot approvals from Dubai International Airport (DXB). This was after authorities partially reopened sections of regional airspace to allow humanitarian and emergency flights.
These approvals enabled the airline to conduct the critical evacuation while many commercial flights remained suspended or heavily restricted.
Students Among Those Rescued
Among those evacuated were a group of Kenyan school students from Nyali who had been stranded in Dubai for four days while on a school trip when the regional airspace closures began.
Their situation had raised concern among families and the Kenyan community after travel disruptions prevented their scheduled return home.
The successful evacuation brought relief to parents and school officials who had been anxiously awaiting safe passage for the students.
In addition to the students, the flight carried Kenyan nationals, residency permit holders, and other travelers affected by the sudden aviation shutdowns across the region.
Middle East Crisis Disrupts Global Travel
The evacuation effort comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. This led to widespread aviation disruptions following retaliatory military strikes involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The conflict triggered precautionary airspace closures across several countries in the Gulf region, including the United Arab Emirates. Consequently, airlines were forced to cancel or reroute flights. Passengers were left stranded in major international transit hubs such as Dubai.
Dubai International Airport — one of the world’s busiest global aviation hubs — temporarily halted many operations before gradually reopening limited airspace corridors.
Kenyan Government Monitoring Diaspora Safety
The Kenyan government, through the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, continues to monitor the safety of Kenyans living and working in the region.
Officials estimate that approximately 500,000 Kenyans currently reside across the Middle East. Notably, there are large communities in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman.
Authorities have urged Kenyans in affected areas to remain vigilant and stay in contact with local embassies. In addition, they should follow official guidance from host governments and Kenyan diplomatic missions.
Additional evacuation or assistance measures may be implemented depending on how the security situation evolves.
Diaspora Community Relief
For many families in Kenya and abroad, the successful evacuation flight offered a moment of relief during an uncertain and rapidly evolving regional crisis.
The repatriation also demonstrated Kenya Airways’ role in supporting national emergency operations. This is particularly true in situations affecting Kenyan citizens abroad.
More evacuation flights could be considered if travel disruptions continue or if additional Kenyans request assistance.
