President Uhuru Kenyatta’s kin sue TJRC over report

KENYA: A relative of President Uhuru Kenyatta has sued the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission over a report that he was given land by the first President of Kenya as a wedding gift.

Ngengi Muigai and his sister, Senator Beth Mugo, have both filed cases separately in court, seeking orders to have the reports linking them to illegal acquisition of land quashed.

Muigai, who is a nephew of the first President of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, wants the court to compelTJRC to produce evidence to prove the contents of its report.

The two petitioners, through their lawyer Jennifer Shamalla, want the section of the TJRC report on land mentioning them adversely to be expunged.

Plea allowed

On July 26, High Court Judge David Majanja allowed Ngegi to challenge the report. He accuses TJRC of failing to accord him a hearing before making its conclusions.

Mrs Mugo also told the High Court last Friday that the matter was urgent because she had been linked to irregular acquisition of beach plots.

High Court Judge Mumbi Ngugi allowed her to seek orders against TJRC.
