A gravedigger died in Kawangare slums after consuming illicit brew as preparations were being made to bury his relative.

Two other people related to the gravedigger were admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in critical condition. After digging their relative’s grave, the three took a break at a local joint in Kaberia village. But the drink, possibly laced with a toxic stimulant turned fatal, handing mourners a double tragedy.

The May 13, incident coming few days after about 100 people died after drinking poisonous liquor in Kiambu, Murang’a, Embu, Kitui, Mukueni and Nakuru counties, left the village in a state of anxiety.

Satellite area OCS Bernard Ngeny said the three were rushed to Kivuli Centre for first aid before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) where one of them died.

Residents claim illicit brews are being sold in the area and accused security agents of laxity.

“I realised the person was not well and was in fact hallucinating. I tied him up and took him to the nearby hospital only to find out it was the effect of illicit brew that had taken his senses for a walkabout,” he said.
