5 judges to hear CORD security laws petition from Jan 28

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 15 – The case challenging the implementation of the controversial security laws will be heard on January 28 and 29 at the High Court in Nairobi.

The new dates were set on Thursday morning by presiding judge Isaac Lenaola who will lead a five-judge bench appointed by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.

The judge further directed that the respondents to the petition, including the Attorney General and the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution file their responses by the 21st of this month.

The opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights have also been urged to file supplementary affidavits on January 23.

CORD is challenging the implementation of the controversial security laws which were passed during a chaotic scenario in the National Assembly last December.

They have since obtained orders suspending eight sections of the clauses in the laws, but Attorney General Githu Muigai is in the Court of Appeal seeking to overturn the decision.
