Kidero is within his rights to support Okundi, Nairobi ODM leaders

Several Nairobi ODM leaders have defended Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero for supporting Homa Bay senator candidate Philip Okundi.

Led by Embakasi Secretary Peter Hongos, the grassroots leaders said Kidero has not disregarded ODM’s constitution by supporting Okundi.

Okundi quit ODM after failing to secure the party’s nomination and is now a candidate under a Maendeleo Democratic Party ticket.

The leaders said on Friday that Kidero is within his rights because MDP is one of the affiliate parties of the Cord alliance.

Mathare Organising Secretary Patrick Lumumba accused some Nairobi MCAs of being used to drive a motion of impeachment against Kidero.

Nairobi county assembly Majority leader Elias Otieno said Kidero should not criticise Cord and ODM through which he became governor.

Otieno said ODM leaders are fully behind Moses Kajwang, younger brother to Homa Bay senator Otieno Kajwang who died in November 2014.

Kidero declared his support for Okundi on Tuesday, and dismissed Kajwang’s candidature as a project of Cord leader Raila Odinga and ODM.

He has been summoned by the party’s disciplinary committee over his support for Okundi.

The senator by-election is slated for February 12.
